The shooting at YouTube headquarters on April 3rd had me really shaken up.
As an empath, I was feeling the emotions associated with the shooting very deeply. Anger, fear, sadness, grief, hopelessness, helplessness, etc, etc...
I also have Generalized Anxiety Disorder. For several hours after hearing about the event, my anxiety was off the charts. Thoughts of "where/who is gonna be next? Am I in danger? Are we ever going to be safe again? How can we fix this?" were all rolling through my head like thunderclouds during monsoon season in Phoenix.
I had to remind myself that I can't control any of those things. I am not responsible for bearing the weight of the world all on my own. So what could I do instead? Anything constructive?
I went outside to be near one of the biggest trees I could find...a place where I felt grounded and comforted. I wept for the victims of all of the recent shootings and their families.
Then I pulled all of my emotions out of my body and into an imaginary bubble, and I watched it in my mind's eye as it floated far away and disintegrated in the sunlight.
With a clear mind, and the support of the tree I was under, I sent long distance Reiki healing to those in San Bruno who needed it in connection to the tragic event.
I felt much better afterward having done something to help those in need, even indirectly. Doing something constructive and empathetic got me out of my head and made me feel connected to the collective consciousness...my fellow humans.
The reason I'm sharing this with you is to encourage you to look outside yourself when you feel the weight of the world crushing down on you. Send your own overbearing emotions away in a bubble (or on a leaf/feather/cloud or whatever imagery resonates with you). And perhaps find a way to help someone else...helping just one person (even in a small way) can make a huge difference in how you feel. And who knows how your efforts will ripple forward in a positive way!
